House Materials

Note: This post is from when we were planning to make a different game, but the thoughts about a "materials hierarchy" are still relevant.

You can make shelter out of different materials. Assumedly, some are better than others, and hence harder to obtain. What could make them better or worse? Brainstorm.

  • Straight-up abstract player-prestige. If you are excited to screenshot your gold-veined marble compound, more power to you.
  • Durability. Not necessarily that it'll fall down or get destroyed, but more like, how often you need to do repairs.
  • Temperature control, if that is a thing.
  • Size/footprint limitations?
  • Ways available to decorate/customize (e.g. windows, doors, can hang things on the wall, gargoyles lol)
  • Certain stations or furniture are limited to certain types of materials (e.g. can't make a hearth out of wood)
  • Protection from meanies who trash or steal stuff.
Nate's going to try a thicker wall-building way of way of doing structures. Maybe focusing on facades is a trap, and what you really want to do is see if you can get away with not drawing roofs at all.

How to make flat floors on sloped terrain is still a question, but I think we'll start trying stuff and see what feels good or weird.
